- Pharmacological Action
Aripiprazole works by attaching itself to the same brain receptors that get activated by dopamine. This medication adjusts dopamine levels in the brain. When the brain has too much dopamine, individuals are likely to suffer from psychosis and mania. Aripiprazole regulates dopamine activity levels if they’re too high thus relieving symptoms such as hallucination. For people with low mood, aripiprazole works to increase dopamine activity thus relieving the symptoms.
Aripiprazole is indicated for treating the following conditions.
- Treatment of the acute bipolar disorder;
- Irritability caused by autistic disorders;
- Depressive disorder treatment;
- Tourette’s syndrome;
- Agitation caused by schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
- Mode of Indication, Dosage and Treatment Duration
Abilify should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. In some cases, the dosage could be increased or reduced to achieve the best results. Aripiprazole tablets should be taken once each day with or without food. It’s best to begin with a lower dose and gradually increase medication over several weeks. Liquid medicine should be measured with the right measuring cup or spoon to get the accurate dosage. The oral daily dose varies from 2mg to 30mg. The duration of treatment depends on the nature of the illness; it can take a few days or weeks for Abilify to begin working. You should swallow the entire tablet and not chew or crush it.
